My biggest thrill as an artist is to evoke emotion in my viewer. A painting is drama, it’s theater, and it inspires emotion. I love people to laugh, cry, get angry, or get inspired when they look at one of my paintings. A moment in time can be stopped on a canvas. The particular way the clouds pile up on a summer day, the unique lay of a banana peel, the barest flick of light in a shadowed eye are moments that are breathtaking. My challenge is to make those moments transcendent and beautiful. After about 50 years of messing about with paint it still awes me to mix a little of this color and a little of that color, dab it onto a canvas and make a painting that I can look at and enjoy time and again, sometimes for years. Just as an actor needs an audience, so do I.
