ABOUT THE FEELING SERIES
The Feeling Series refers to a series of large canvases that I first started painting in 1994 after many years of thinking about what different emotions would look like if they were painted. Then three years of psycho-therapy ensued in order for me to really access my feelings. These paintings are autobiographical and do not attempt to depict a universal view of the emotion that is the title of the painting. Joy is what brings me joy: flowers, nature, music, and art, for example. Each one of these paintings has many layers of meanings and stories which add an air of mysteriousness to them.
When I began the Series I planned to do twelve canvases. Most of them were painted in several studios I had rented in Westerly, Rhode Island. When I began, these paintings had an idea, theme or image in my mind before I started painting the series. I worked out the list of feelings that I wanted to include and a rough idea of what would best describe that feeling. As I went along some ideas changed and new props for the paintings appeared, as if by magic.
In the winter of 2001 our lives went from “comfortable” to “poverty” in three months in a disastrous financial debacle. Fear was not finished, and awaited my return from Florida for the summer. Instead I returned early in order to finish that painting in the studio that was soon to be history, as we had only one choice; sell most of our stuff and move to our paid-for home in Florida. Fear presaged the events that took us by complete surprise!
That began many years of tumult; constant scrambling for money, George’s continuing medical problems, and the realization that I’d have to start my career over in Florida where I was totally unknown and the new kid on the block. I tried to work in the tiny spare bedroom but it was nearly impossible to work on a 48 inch tall canvas, backed into a corner of the room. Time and money pressures were not conducive to working on these paintings. I need a clear mind and settled life to engage in my dark side! So the series languished for quite a few years. I tried to inject energy into it, but it was impossible until the summer of 2009. After George died I was able to turn our living room into a spacious studio. Nearly 10 years after moving to Florida work resumed on the Feeling Series paintings. I considered ending the series at 7 paintings but somehow that seemed like abandoning part of myself.
These paintings are available as Giclée Reproductions on both canvas and paper. Contact me, if you are interested in prices of Giclées.
I have a booklet (same as the PDF mentioned above), describing each of these paintings, their meanings, and the circumstances under which it was painted. Click on the image to view the PDF. If you want a copy of it as a small booklet, click the PayPal button. Price is $4.00
