A Note on Framing and Buying

These booklets are instruction manuals for painting and drawing. They are given to my students when they take one of my classes, but many of my students tell me that the book was as useful as the class so I have decided to sell them directly to anyone who wants to help themselves as artists.

Understanding Drawing is a 38 page booklet that covers a number of important aspects of drawing. This book demystifies the illusions that cause the brain to be confused by foreshortening and help you understand how to draw what you see and not what you think you see. It will show you how to use a stick for sighting proportion and perspective and there is a section on how to draw people and figures, as well as the many drawing mediums and tools.

The Six Stages of Painting shows how to paint a picture from the "ground" up. A painting is like building a house. The foundation, studs, and joists have to be placed and made solid to hold the whole thing together. And so a painting is similar and the aspects of composition, construction, value, and color, are equally important for the artist to address. The technique is based on the Impressionist's theories of painting but can be useful for any approach to realism and classical painting style.

Mediations in Watercolor is a booklet that shows how to paint using the "dry brush" technique by layering the paint by crosshatching the strokes. Paintings can be built with very strong colors and developed as far as desired. The method uses a few washes to kill the white paper and then color is applied in small strokes. This technique is loosely based on the methods of Egg Tempera painting and frequently colors are applied right out of the tube with only a little water added. The repetitive strokes seem to invoke a kind of alpha state and can be very meditative and relaxing.

Egg Tempera is a very exciting medium that gives the artist incredible choices of pigments from around the world. It is the paint of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, best known in works by Giotto, Fra Angelico and Botticelli. A Modern Approach to Egg Tempera is a booklet that shows some ofthe elements of this medium, from separating eggs to painting and finishing a gesso panel. It includes a list of suppliers and some very good resources on the internet.
