There is a very interesting town called Dunedin in Pinellas County. It is a fun place to visit, as it has many art activities, including the Dunedin Fine Art Center, numerous galleries and boutiques and great places to eat. Last fall the Fine Art Center sponsored Concorso Rapido which is the Italian equivalent, I think, of painting alla prima, which means all at once. It was all about Plein Air painting which is outdoors, on site, and if you are really doing it right you will not work on the painting in your studio, which is sort of a rule that everyone breaks. In any case I showed up bright and early to participate in this event and was told that I could pick any spot around the village. I was told to paint until 4 in the afternoon at which point the painting would come back to the central square to be exhibited and judged. Prizes were given. I didn’t get a prize for my painting but I had a splendid time among the ferns in this shady garden painting that kind of surprising baroque lion fountain leaning up against the tree. It was quite a task, getting everything to work in this painting, not to mention the fence that had some tricky perspective. And yes, I did work on it at home, but only a little, mostly to make sure that the top and bottom of that fence went to the same vanishing point. I must admit I am a little neurotic about stuff like that!
