Storms are a reoccurring theme in my work. My mother told me that I was painting storms and explosions and fires when I was in kindergarten. The school was not happy about this and called my parents in for a conference. Their recommendation; a psychiatrist. My mother’s first cousin was, in her words, a “victim” of Freudian Analysis which she thought ruined this poor lady, her talents, and her sexuality. So, based on this, my mother refused to “ruin” her creative child, and I was encouraged to paint and draw anything I wanted. The kindergarten teacher was not happy about much of anything I did, including my orange skies, and strange paintings and my mother adopted the mantra of “oh what fun” when I presented her with these odd paintings. Somehow we survive all this chaos and double messages, but the fear of storms remains intact in me, and the incredible beauty, awesome forces of weather and the reminder of how we have little control over much of anything, is a theme that I explore often. I have many opportunities to watch the skies in Florida, as this is a common sight for many months in this region of the world.
