I love the challenge of putting together a still life that has hidden meanings. It can occupy my thoughts for a long time, and the process feels very creative. Every painting is different, and can focus on people and/or events in their lives. Celebration of the Marriage was a wedding gift for a special lady who I knew from the time she was six years old. In it I wanted to work out the theme of Yin/Yang which I feel suits a marriage. So elements of the design were straight/curvy, light/dark, hard/soft, big/small and so on. The bride was born in Scotland, and the groom is a Cameron and was married wearing the Cameron Tartan. I had to work that into the painting.
In Alison and Allan the objects were chosen by my client. She was very specific about what was to go into the painting, but how they were worked out was my problem. She sent me a list of things she wanted, all to go into a relatively small canvas; 24 x 24. I was intrigued by the challenge of doing a painting with a tandem bicycle, a pair of golden eagles, two shirts, some vegetables, a black Labrador retriever, a pair of Leica Binoculars, an autographed baseball, a quill pen and inkwell, a map of Tolkien’s middle earth, a caduceus, a challah bread and a pair of old-fashioned silhouettes. This painting was a gift from Alison to Allen on the occasion of their marriage, and in it many aspects of their relationship and things they love are pictured. I spent months working out the design of the painting, and the objects in it. I made the caduceus but in the end it was too big and so I had to take a photo of the one I made and tack that to the wall. In fact when I finally started the painting it seemed as if all the hard work was finished! To see more about this painting click on the picture. |
