Hope, Recovery and Redemption was commissioned by a friend who asked me to create something for her living room. It  incorporates elements of her life and is symbolic of a key event in her life. My friend suffered a traumatic brain injury, thus changing her life immediately and devastatingly. Her spiritual life sustains her, and the painting depicts her great loves, the sea, rocks, flowers and stained glass windows. She literally ran into a stone (fell on some rocks by the sea’s edge) and a doorway opened to a new life for her. Not necessarily better in many respects, but simpler, more focused, and certainly more intense. When I get to whining about my poor lot in life I think of my friend, and the obstacles she faced; learning to walk and talk again, dealing with incapacitating headaches, wild mood swings, and memory loss. Her great good humor and positive spirit is inspiring for anyone—and people recovering from any trauma might find hope from those who have gone before.

New Moon was commissioned by a psychologist for a psychologist. It was a gift. I was told many things about the recipient of this painting and had enough material to come up with a variety of images and symbols. Thank goodness for EBAY where many of my props were acquired. Where else, in a limited time, would you find an eagle vase or a couple of poodles? I used my computer to typeset the acronyms and astrological symbols (astrology is a deep interest of his) and then traced them onto fabric to use for the drapery in the painting. I really enjoyed adding the black and white poodles who are very special and important to this man. It was a complicated and somewhat cerebral painting that I finished November 2000. I had a great deal of fun planning this painting. The various interests, and life history, of this fascinating person, who I’ve never met or spoken to, sparked in me an aura of mystery and I felt that I really knew him! His unusual interests and variegated life intrigued me, and so I become totally immersed in this painting.
