Two Red Onions       11 x 15          Watercolor        $150 (framed)

The experience of painting “simple” objects is so exciting for me. I put quotes around “simple” because there is nothing simple about these two onions! I spent many hours trying to capture the essence of these fellows and I feel I’m still way short of the mark. The exact color and reflectivity of the highlight on the skin of the onion was incredible and I kept asking myself “how do you paint that?” I must confess that I do use white to enhance my highlights. For those of you who don’t know watercolors this is supposed to be a “no-no” in purist watercolor philosophy…..you are supposed to leave the white paper showing and have it in perfect value. Well, somehow it doesn’t work out that way often, and one of my friends, a superb watercolor painter, told me the trick of using a tiny amount of white gesso, (acrylic based paint) to punch up those lights at the end. I carry it around with me in a film canister and I don’t feel guilty one bit using it! The gesso is thick and stays on top of the paper. White watercolor pigment usually translates as a dirty white and won’t do the job at all.
