WATERCOLOR

It took me years to arrive at a comfortable relationship with watercolor. I am told that my technique is “dry brush”. I adapted a description of how Andrew Wyeth does his egg tempera paintings to my watercolors. I dislike making muddy paintings and so frequently my former efforts produced dense unattractive areas of paint. Now I use a washed underpainting, over which I layer color using a fine brush dipped in very strong pigment which I cross hatch. I find I can control the intensity of the value and color this way, and make very strong paintings. Generally I do watercolors when I am on vacation and they become very meditative and relaxing. I love to do fruit and vegetable portraits in this medium.
