A Note on Framing and Buying

Pastel is, along with oil, a medium that I have used from my teen years. I love the way colors layer and the luminous quality of the finished work. I like my pastels to have a "painterly" quality to them, and do not smear them together as I work.

Somewhere the Sun is Shining, Pastel on Art Spectrum Paper

Size: 18 x 24, Frame is plain black 27 x 33

A fear and fascination with the power of these storms is a continuing obsession. I have become somewhat used to the daily summer thunder storms, but some of them look terribly ominous and I have a desire to find a rock to hide under but need to photograph the darn thing first! I have many Florida storm photographs that I later work into  paintings.

Farm Relic, Pastel on Art Spectrum paper

Size: 9  x 12, currently unframed

The North Tampa Arts League (NTAL) organized a Plein Air day at the farm of one of the regions' well-known artists. None of the views of the surrounding Florida Hill Country spoke to me that day, but this old tractor did with its brilliant orange body against the blue sky.

Birds in Flight, Pastel on Art Spectrum paper

Size: 18 x 24, Frame is antique gold with triple matte

I belong to an informal painting group called "Les Girls". We are friends who meet once a week to paint together, and occasionally show our work together. Someone had an idea that we all paint the same still life so the birds of paradise was part of the set up. This painting was the result of that idea.

The autumn theme of the corn, gourds and mini-pumpkins started out as a pastel demonstration which was later finished in my studio.

From Bonnie's Garden, Pastel on Art Spectrum Paper
Size: 8 x 11, Matted and gallery wrapped

My planned class demonstration was scrapped when one of my students came in with these lovely vegetables from her garden. I could not resist that spring onion and the leaf lettuce, both as a painting and later as a salad!

Reverie, Pastel on board
Size: 16 x 20, Framed in plain black wood with double matte 27 x 23

The art board was coated with Art Spectrum primer which grabs a lot of pastel and so the surface is thick with juicy pastel. It was a bit of a project to keep all that black pigment from migrating into the blue sky!

$400
